This I believe: Freedom

Freedom.  The power to act, speak, or think as one wants without being subjected to any consequences. Freedom a word with different meaning, so contagious people die for. To liberate yourself from all bondage and obstacles enables you to access freedom. Being free from the norms set by society, being free to walk my own path and not those set by parents and society, that is my definition of freedom.

Savor freedom like you savor fresh air. For it is hard to gain but easy to lose. Easy to find but hard to catch.

I wake up every day being thankful because I know I have my freedom, something my ancestors never had but fought trying to gain. My mom tells me stories of how my grandfather fought in the wars which helped liberate our country. I see him as one of my heroes even if I never got the chance to meet him, he fought to ensure my freedom.  One of my biggest fighters for freedom and liberation was Martin Luther King Jr He brought together a whole nation and led them to fight for their freedom, by doing so he was murdered but his hard work did pay off. In today’s society we see government trying to take away people’s freedom, by enforcing immigration bans. Most people take freedom for granted, not knowing what it actually means, until it is taken away from them.

Once you’ve experienced something that you are most scared of, nothing of that nature can affect you anymore. You’ve made yourself free from the bondage created in your mind, making you have utter freedom over the bondage.

“And this I believe: that the free, exploring mind of the individual human is the most valuable thing in the world. And this I would fight for: the freedom of the mind to take any direction it wishes, undirected. And this I must fight against: any idea, religion, or government which limits or destroys the individual. This is what I am and what I am about.” John Steinbeck.

Upon reading this quote I realize a day will come when everyone will be able to obtain their freedom, and fight against the corrupt and those trying to steal away other individuals freedom. The day will come when we shall obtain absolute freedom: freedom of speech, religion and the most important Freedom of the mind.

My ancestors died for my frredom, I have no choice than to use it for the better good and not take it for granted. My freedom allows me to liberate myself from the world. My freedom.

  1. Dear Mayowa,

After hearing this piece in class, it became a high priority of mine to write a comment on it. One thing that I greatly appreciated was how you used other people’s for more than just a representation of your topic, but as something to respond to and add to your argument. It demonstrates how there was thought behind your images and additions rather than just including something for the sake of completion.

In terms of improvements, I’d suggest making your posts a little longer. You went into depth with your topic and its relations to your life, but if you were to try and make the piece a little longer, you could potentially dig even deeper and create an incredibly meaningful piece.

In conclusion, this is an extremely profound piece that I identified with and allowed me to see a little deeper into the kind of person you are. I look forward to seeing other posts from you.

    Sincerely,
    Spencer

  2. Dear Mayowa,

This was a beautiful piece of writing. I feel like the concept of freedom really connects to you as you are always doing whatever you want to do. Whatever you think is best for you, you go out and do it, and you never regard somebodies negative thought about what you want to do. Maybe it runs in the family.

For a few improvements, it would be a lot better if your piece had a little more writing in it, as what Spencer said. Also there were a few grammatical errors which could simply be fixed by doing a quick proof read of your work before submitting it.

Overall, it is a beautiful piece of writing. I look forward to working with you in this semester, I feel like we can both help each other become better at writing.

    Best Regards,

    Amarinder
